Art Jewelry Today 3

Two years ago, I submitted my images for Art Jewelry Today 3 . I almost forgot that I applied for it. The book was published in 2011. Recently, I found the book at the RISD library and saw my images in the book. : ) So I wanted to share them with you all.

This Art Jewelry Today 3 is the overview of the wearable artwork created by more than one hundred of today’s top art jewelers. The artists provide discussions of their work along with examples of their creativity. Hundreds of vibrant color photographs display one-of-a-kind works of art, including necklaces, brooches, bracelets, rings, and earrings in gold, silver, mixed metals, glass, and enamels, with found objects and innovative designs. In a departure from the previous volumes, the artists are arranged alphabetically so readers may see the entire scope of their work on the page together.

The author, Jeffrey B. Snyder, has been writing about decorative arts for over a decade. Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. is based in Atglen, PA on the Schiffer Book Farm. The company is known for publishing high quality Antique, Arts, Architecture, Lifestyle, and Military History books, as well as a successful line of children and ghost books.

Ethics of Wearable Art

My third interview with Sublime Experiment on how wearable art can have an impact in society.

“When my work communicates with my viewers and wearers, I hope they would be provoked to ask questions they would not normally ask in their everyday lives” - Yong Joo Kim

Sublime Experiment

Rediscovering Beauty (아름다움의 재발견)

My second interview with Sublime Experiment on how beauty can arise from mundane or ordinary materials through trust and empathy.

"I thought the path to beauty was through hiding and fixing myself. But what I learned through my work is that if I can stick with these mundane or ordinary materials for long enough by trusting that they'll eventually show me their true colors, I can always discover a set of characteristics I didn't know they had." - Yong Joo Kim

Sublime Experiment [Korean Subtitle / 한글자막] from Sublime Experiment on Vimeo.

Press Release: Niche award winning artist Yong Joo Kim launches a Kickstarter project to introduce a new body of wearable art objects

For more information, please visit: http://kck.st/MwQRHY

Providence, Rhode Island—Friday July 20, 2012—Niche award winning artist Yong Joo Kim today launched a Kickstarter project to introduce a new body of wearable art objects made primarily of hand-cut, hand-assembled, and hand-sewn Velcro® brand hook-and-loop fasteners. (Pictured below)

Yong Joo describes the design of unique and light weight wearable art objects —consisting of earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, and brooches— as having emerged from sincere empathy and persistent trust in the hidden potential of a seemingly ordinary material. She compares this process as being similar to the kind of trust endowed to a student by a great teacher to bring out their full potential.

This body of work is being introduced as part of a larger project titled Sublime Experiment, a small business platform designed to explore how artists can more proactively engage with the public in order to provoke meaningful conversations around concepts of trust, beauty, and value.

Yong Joo says she believes that "art objects in social contexts, can provoke us to ask questions, change the way we understand the world, and uncover the beauty in ourselves and others, be it raw material or people."

The project will live on the Kickstarter website until Sep 18, 2012 with the goal of raising $10,000 to cover the production of custom eco-friendly packaging for the objects as well as custom tooling for the silver earring posts.

[Part I] Photo Shoot with Olivia Culpo, Miss U.S.A!

I have been meaning to write about this photography session from last year and the lazy me has finally gotten around to it. Why? There was a big motivation to get me to edit and release the photos. Can you guess what it is???

Soooooo, last night our model, Miss Rhode Island Olivia Culpo, just won the Miss U.S.A crown and will represent the United States in this year's Miss Universe pageant!!!!!! I was so trilled to watch the moment that she won the crown!!!!!!!!  She is absolutely beautiful, sweet and smart!! CONGRATULATIONS OLIVIA!!!! I'm so happy for you and so proud that you are the Miss USA 2012!!

I am especially proud of her for answering the question "Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?" by saying
"I do think that that would be fair but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country."
Now, here she is wearing my neckpieces!!!

[Reconfiguring the Ordinary : Twist Looped and Attached / Neckpiece made of hook and loop fastener by Yong Joo Kim.]

[Reconfiguring the Ordinary: Twist Looped and Linked / Neckpiece made of hook and loop fastener by Yong Joo Kim.]

I also wanted to especially thank my photographer Daniel Gagnon who took these beautiful photos. Without him this photography session never would have happened. I would also like to thank Bethany Mechan for the Hair and Jessica Galbreath Berndt for the Makeup. : )

More photos are coming! Please stay tuned!
