Artist Honored for Innovative and Creative Designs in North American Craft
March 8, 2012 (Philadelphia) — The coveted NICHE Award was presented to Yong Joo Kim in a ceremony held February 18, 2012, at the Buyers Market of American Craft. Kim’s piece Reconfiguring the Ordinary: Twist Looped and Linked was selected as a winner in the Jewelry: Sculpture to Wear category.
The annual NICHE Awards ceremony, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Sponsored by NICHE magazine, the exclusive trade publication for independent retailers of American craft, the NICHE Awards program recognizes excellence and innovation in the U.S. and Canadian fine craft industry.
Professional and student craft artists submitted nearly 2,000 entries for the 2012 competition. In December 2011, NICHE magazine announced the 161 professional finalists and 60 student finalists, who were invited to display their work at the Buyers Market trade show.
Entries were judged on the following main criteria:
• technical excellence, both in surface design and form
• a distinct quality of unique, original and creative thought
• market viability (professional entries only)
